Tape and Labels

People frequently ask me what types of tape and labels we use for equipment, cables, and boxes in our sound systems, so here’s what it is lately:

Labels

We use several sizes of labels. We prefer Online Labels WR series, since it leaves the least residue; works in either laser or inkjet; and costs less than other series. It’s important that all WR series is covered on top with clear vinyl tape to stay stuck.

Address Size 2 5/8″ x 1″. Like Avery 5160 or Online Labels OL875WR. We primarily use these for larger cables, like mult and L21-30, for tour only. I recommend buying 100 sheets for most shows, or 250 sheets for tours.

Return-Address Size Labels 1 3/4″ x 1/2″. Like Avery 5167 or Online Labels OL25WR. We use these for equipment labels, cable labels, mult labels, and Steck labels. I recommend 250 sheets for a small-medium show, and 500 sheets for a big show.

Full Sheet Labels 8 1/2″ x 11″. Like Avery 5165 or Online Labels OL713WR. We cut these up for small box labels, radio labels, mult panel labels, balun labels, and many other gear-specific labels. I recommend 100 sheets for a small show and 250 sheets for a big show.

Half-Sheet Labels 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ Like Avery 5126 or Online Labels OL400WR. We use these for box labels. I recommend 250 sheets for a small show and 500 sheets for a big show.

Tape

We use Tape Planet Clear Vinyl, since it’s robust, leaves less residue than standard electrical tape or gaffers tape, and is cost-effective.

One roll of Tape Planet 3/4″ Clear Vinyl per five bundles.

One roll of Tape Planet 1″ Clear Vinyl per 12 bundles.

One roll of Tape Planet 2″ Clear Vinyl per seven bundles.

Unlike with other series of tape and labels, the combination of WR series and Tape Planet clear vinyl doesn’t require a base layer of electrical tape, meaning less time, less money, and less residue/work for the shop on the return.

We like this tape dispenser. Gaff tape it to the table for one-handed operation. And we like this paper cutter.

We’ve tried several combinations of tape and labels, and are always looking to improve, so if someone finds any better products or processes, please let me know!
